Foxy Couture on Fox Sports: The 2019 US Open

A common question heard around Foxy Couture from tourists year round was one of a few quirky "laws" that inspired this feature, which aired on Fox Sports during the 2019 US Open, hosted at Pebble Beach.

"Is there really a law saying you can't wear high heels in Carmel-by-the-Sea?"

So when Gina Mazzella of Fox Sports poked her head in Foxy on the morning of April 27th asking if Areanna or me had heard of the infamous "High Heel Law", we were well prepared with our answer.

The law, which was authorized by the city attorney in 1963, required anyone wearing shoes with a heel higher than 2 inches or with a base of less than one square inch, to carry a permit with them authorizing choice in footwear. This was to protect the city against lawsuits filed by people who had tripped over irregular pavement distorted by tree roots.

Permits were available for free at City Hall, although these days the law is more of an urban myth than one that is actually enforced. Still, it's fun to tease first-time tourists as they try on fabulous heels in our shop, by informing them how unfortunate it is that they won't be able to wear their new shoes around town without the risk of being stopped by the police.

Customers always get a laugh out of learning about the law, and everyone working at Foxy enjoys the fact that we get to revel in one of Carmel-by-the-Sea's little splendors.

When June finally came and the US Open rolled into Pebble Beach, we waited with excitement for the Carmel-by-the-Sea promo to air. Gina had given us advanced notice that it would air internationally on Saturday, June 15th, but seeing it in real time was such a surreal moment.

Foxy was so grateful for the chance to take part in such a special feature highlighting the magic of Carmel-by-the-Sea, which has been our home now for almost 10 years. What made the opportunity even more special for us was the fact that the Fox Sports crew found our little shop, which we often joke is tucked away in the Vandervort Courtyard in order to gain "intentional shoppers", or shoppers that have to look closely in order to find us if they haven't been to the shop before.
